It's an old proverb. Yet it explains why so many organisations struggle to innovate.
Most people assume executives reject new ideas because they don't understand them. That's rarely the reason.
The real reason is incentives.
Imagine you're a CFO.
If you approve a new approach and it succeeds, you'll probably receive some recognition. Maybe a bonus. Maybe a promotion.
If you approve the same idea and it fails, your reputation may never recover.
The reward for being right is limited.
The cost of being wrong can be enormous.
Under those incentives, doing nothing is often the rational decision.
Many corporate decisions are therefore not made to maximise shareholder value. They are made to minimise career risk.
That is why familiar mistakes survive for years while better alternatives struggle to get their first opportunity.
The greatest competitor of innovation is rarely another company.
It is institutional inertia.
Artificial Intelligence will automate many analytical tasks. It will generate reports, forecasts and projections faster than any analyst.
It will not change human incentives.
As long as organisations reward caution more than truth, they will continue to choose the familiar over the better.
